Two South Jersey men are accused of the unprovoked assault on an off-duty police officer on Wildwood’s boardwalk.

The victim, a member of Stone Harbor’s police force, “sustained significant injuries, including a concussion and facial fractures,” according to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office.

The attack occurred the evening of March 12 while the officer was running for exercise, a statement from the prosecutor’s office said. An investigation identified “a group of individuals who had traveled to Wildwood from Gloucester and Camden counties and were responsible for this attack.”

Isaiah Ortiz of Lindenwold and Elijah William of Deptford, both 19, are accused of aggravated assault and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, the prosecutor’s office said.

Isaiah Ortiz also is charged with failure to render aid to a victim, as were three other Camden County men: 21-year-old Manuel Ortiz of Lindenwold, 20-year-old William Jewell of Magnolia and 20-year-old Maliky Reyes of Stratford.

The charges are only allegations. No one has been convicted in the case.

Isaiah Ortiz and Williams were held at Cape May County Jail. The others were released on summonses.

An investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the prosecutor’s office at 609-465-1135 or Wildwood police at 609-522-0222.
